Thinking and analyzing are required. Another way to do it is to use export-from-chart function. I wrote up a post with step-by-step instructions, to include deleting the branch from the original tree. The instructions were based on Family Tree Maker for Mac 2, but they should still work for recent versions for both Windows and Mac.
